Child Inclusive Mediation
Also known as CIM, this specialist approach gives children a safe and neutral setting to have their voices heard during the mediation process when parents are making decisions about their future.
It’s designed for children aged 10 and above, but can be considered for younger children depending on the individual circumstances.
Sessions can be conducted online, in schools, or face-to-face, depending on what works best for the child and family.
CIM is costed on a case-by-case basis. The government voucher scheme can be utilised to provide funding for child-inclusive mediation.
FAQ
Why involve children in mediation?
Children are often deeply affected by separation and the changes it brings. CIM helps ensure that:
- Children feel listened to and respected.
- Parents better understand their child’s feelings, wishes and concerns.
- Decisions are made with the child’s needs at the centre.
- Children don’t feel stuck in the middle of adult conflict.
How does it work?
- A specially trained child-inclusive mediator meets privately with your child, only if they are willing and both parents give consent.
- The conversation is child-focused and age-appropriate, providing them space to talk about what matters to them.
- With the child’s permission, the mediator shares important themes from the conversation with the parents during mediation, helping to guide more informed decisions.
Children are not asked to make decisions or choose between parents. The focus is on giving them a voice, not a choice.
Is it right for our family?
CIM may be helpful if:
- Your child is struggling with the changes caused by separation
- You want to understand their perspective better.
- You want to support your child’s emotional well-being through the process.
Child-inclusive mediation is always voluntary for both you and your child.
We’ll discuss it with you first to decide if it suits you.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions depends on what you need to resolve. Many clients reach an agreement within 2 to 4 sessions.
